Center of Brain and Spinal Vascular Diseases

Surgical and interventional therapy of cerebrospinal vascular diseases has always been essential for the department of neurosurgery in Xuanwu Hospital. As early as the 1970s, the cerebrospinal vascular team led by Professor Zhongcheng Wang and Professor Yadu Zhao dedicated pioneering works in China, such as the establishment of diagnostic criteria for cerebral angiography, resection of cerebral vascular malformations, clipping of intracranial aneurysms, extracranial and extracranial bypass surgery for ischemic cerebrovascular diseases. After Professor Zhongcheng Wang's team moved to Tiantan Hospital in 1983, Professor Yuji Ding continually led the team to explore the surgical treatments for cerebrospinal vascular diseases. He has plentiful experience and research projects in ruptured aneurysms and subarachnoid hemorrhage. He also established a neurosurgical critical care unit. In the late 1980s, Professor Shenmao Li of the department of Radiology set up a surgical catheter room and began to carry out interventional therapy for cerebrospinal vascular diseases.

In the mid-1980s, Professor Feng Ling introduced the neural intervention technology system into China and established a neurointervention team and training center in the PLA General Hospital and Beijing hospital. In October 2000, she and some team members moved to Xuanwu Hospital, integrated with the original neurosurgery and interventional team, and expanded the Neurosurgery Ward, Neurointerventional diagnosis and treatment Center, and neurosurgery critical care unit. Professor Feng Ling's team cooperated closely with the neurology department, the imaging department, and the vascular ultrasound department to establish a doctor training system with both microsurgery and neurointervention. We have held the China cerebrovascular disease forum, organized the magazine the Journal of cerebrovascular disease, and established academic platforms such as Beijing cerebrovascular disease center, Institute of cerebrovascular disease of Capital Medical University, and School of neurointervention training of Capital Medical University. We have also undertaken the major scientific and technological projects in the 10th Five Year Plan and the 12th Five Year Plan. In 2006, we won the second prize of the international science and technology progress award, which created a new surgical and interventional therapy of cerebrospinal vascular diseases. The neurosurgery cerebrospinal vascular subspecialty is gradually growing. The personnel and technology are mature little by little.

To deepen the clinical and research work, in 2006, the cerebrospinal vascular disease center was divided into two teams: hemorrhagic cerebrospinal vascular disease group and ischemic cerebrovascular disease group, with director Meng Li and Professor Zhongrong Miao as the team leaders. The hemorrhagic team is responsible for vascular malformations, aneurysms, cerebral hemorrhage, and other brain and spinal cord diseases. The ischemia team is responsible for head and neck vascular stenosis and occlusion, acute cerebral infarction, and head and neck venous diseases. In 2018, with the opening of the China-INI building, the number of sickbeds also increased, and personnel changed. Professor Hongqi Zhang led the hemorrhagic cerebrospinal vascular disease group, and Professor Liqun Jiao led the ischemia group. We always focused on developing and providing the most advanced treatment options to offer the best possible care for the patients and their families.

 Our Center's features:

 1. Characteristics of the doctors: All doctors have completed the MD degree. After clinical training in various sub-specialties of neurosurgery, they were selected to enter the cerebrovascular disease center for more than five years of training in operation and interventional therapy. The training includes intensive clinical skills practice, laboratory microsurgery, and neuroanatomy training, and scientific research training at home and abroad. Only after strict examination can they become our Center's attending doctors.

  2. The scope of treatment includes Intracranial aneurysms, spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage, craniofacial vascular malformations, cerebral arteriovenous malformations, dural arteriovenous fistula, traumatic carotid-cavernous sinus fistula, cerebral and spinal cavernous vascular malformations, spinal and spinal vascular malformations, spontaneous cerebral hemorrhage.

 3. Medical features: We carefully choose the appropriate treatment methods, including surgery, interventional therapy, or hybrid surgery. We guarantee the green channel of acute hemorrhagic cerebrovascular disease in 7x24 hours.

 4. Clinical ward size: We have 60 specialist beds, divided into five central units. We have completed more than 2000 operations and interventional therapy and more than 2000 angiographies in one year.

 5. Teaching and training: Each year, we train more than 60 cerebrovascular surgery and interventional doctors all over the country and hold more than 30 academic conferences and classes.

 6. Scientific research: We have a complete and accurate case database, which has accumulated more than 8000 cases of aneurysms, 5000 cases of cerebral vascular malformations, and 3000 cases of spinal vascular malformations. On this basis, there is continuous clinical research achievement.

At present, our research projects include three of the significant scientific and technological projects of the 13th Five Year Plan period, four of the national natural science projects, and three of the local and ministerial projects. We have carried out genetic research on cerebral spinal vascular malformations and achieved some positive results. The research paper has been published on Brain. We have undertaken four preclinical trials of instruments and equipment. More than 20 academic articles are published every year. Our ability to offer the latest breakthroughs in treatment is supported through our extensive programs in basic, translational, and clinical research.
