2024-05-19 19:01 Beijing

On Saturday, May 18, the operating room of the Department of Neurosurgery was still busy. In the corridor, swift figure was shuttling one by one; under the shadowless lamp, a pair of serious eyes were mapped; on the instruments, a set of safe values were being monitored - there was no sign that it was weekend time.

In order to give full play to the value of high-quality medical resources, maximize to meet the growing medical demands under the new situation, comprehensively improve the utilization efficiency of the operating room, shorten the waiting time of patients for surgery, our department officially launched the "Weekend Elective Surgery" from May 18th, according to the hospital's unified arrangements.

Convenient: Surgery can be operated on weekend

At 8:00 a.m. on May 18th, all 9 operating rooms, 3 catheterization rooms, and 1 hybridization operating room of the Department of Neurosurgery were opened to formally start the weekend surgery day activity. Under the leadership of Professor Zhao Guoguang, Director and President of the National Medical Center for Neurological Diseases, Professor Zhang Hongqi, Director of the Department of Neurosurgery, Professor Liang Jiantao, Deputy Director of the Department of Neurosurgery, and other renowned experts, 26 difficult neurological surgeries were successfully and orderly carried out on the first day of the opening, with the efficient cooperation of the operating room and the Department of Anesthesiology.

Among these 26 surgeries, there was a patient from Henan, Mr. Zhang (a pseudonym), 39 years old, who found out by chance that he suffered from an aneurysm through examination a month ago. On the recommendation of doctors from other hospitals, he found Director Zhang Hongqi of the Department of Neurosurgery of Xuanwu Hospital, who, after preliminary examination, decided to carry out anterior traffic aneurysm clipping operation for him. Due to the strained situation in the miscellaneous operating room on the weekdays, which required a long queuing time. Mr. Zhang was admitted to the hospital after the weekend elective surgery was opened, and was diagnosed with anterior communicating and middle cerebral artery aneurysm by imaging early on the 18th, followed by the surgery, which was very successful. After knowing that Director Zhang solved his two aneurysms in one go and there was no need to put stents in the later stage, Mr. Zhang said that the treatment effect exceeded his expectation and he felt very lucky to have caught the "weekend surgery" chance, and thanked Director Zhang's team for their exquisite surgical skills and the nursing team for their careful care. He is now looking forward to being discharged from the hospital and returning to his normal work and life.

Fast: The waiting time is shorter

With people’s increasing demand for medical resources, they have difficulty in finding a bed and waiting for a long time for surgeries, which are problems that our department has been facing. The weekend elective surgery carried out by our hospital will effectively solve this dilemma, especially for the deadline surgery that is more serious and should not be delayed too long.

Xiao Wang (pseudonym), a 16-year-old patient with medically refractory epilepsy, was examined and found to have a tumor in the medial temporal lobe, which was assessed to be the epileptogenic focus of epilepsy. The patient's family waited anxiously for the surgery after learning that he had a brain tumor. President Zhao Guoguang's team conducted a comprehensive evaluation and decided to admit the patient to the hospital for surgery. According to the normal surgery schedule, the surgery date was scheduled for next week. But after learning that the surgery could be performed on the weekend, President Zhao Guoguang decisively "added a blockage" and performed the surgery on the 18th for Xiao Wang. The surgery was successfully completed, and the patient was transferred to the hospital room for observation, and the whole treatment process was orderly and efficient. "I am very grateful to the doctor and the hospital, so that my child was able to get the best treatment in the shortest time," the patient's mother said. Thanks to the surgery was scheduled on Saturday, she had more time and energy to take care of her child, and her child could return to school earlier.

Safety: All-out efforts would be made to ensure medical safety

Previously, the hospital had held many meetings to study the feasibility of weekend surgeries, implementation procedures, safeguard measures, management programs, etc. to ensure the smooth implementation of weekend surgeries. At the same time, in order to avoid the risk of surgery, medical safety, the hospital has developed a standardized, rigorous implementation of weekend surgery planning. Besides, it made weekend surgery doctors shift system to fully protect the doctors' rest time when serving the patients at the same time,so that the doctors can achieve, safe and efficient completion of each case of surgery.

Carrying out weekend surgery is a concrete manifestation of urgency for patients and full steam ahead to serve patients. Weekend surgery will effectively shorten patients' waiting time and hospitalization days, for example, patients who have been admitted to the hospital on Thursday and completed the preoperative examination on Friday do not need to wait for two more days on the weekend to undergo the surgery, which reduces the time for office workers and students to take a leave of absence, and allows them to recover and be discharged from the hospital at the earliest possible time. Shortening hospitalization days means reducing costs, and at the same time, the hospital improves the efficiency of the operating room, which is a win-win situation for both the hospital and the patients.
