Barrow Neuroscience Publications
This week we visited the illustration studio of BNI, which is actually a neuroscience publishing house dedicated to BNI physicians and not an external service. The publisher has more than a dozen full-time employees who, in addition to medical illustration, provide services such as paper editing and retouching, paper diagramming, animation and 3D modeling. Each service is performed by the corresponding editor, illustrator, and 3D modeler, so that the quality and efficiency of the service is guaranteed.

I met with BNI's "cyber celebrity" illustrator Peter M. Lawrence at BNI Neuroscience Press, who recently worked with Kristen Larson Keil, another illustrator and department manager at the press, on Dr. Lawton's Seven Cavernomas series, which was published in JNS Magazine and won an award from the American Society of Medical Illustrators. Peter Lawrence recently illustrated Dr. Lawton's Seven Cavernomas series with another publisher, Kristen Larson Keil, who is also the publisher's department manager, which was published in JNS magazine and won an award from the American Association of Medical Illustration Studios.

In 2022 Dr. Lawton, with the assistance of BNI Neuroscience Press, published a series of articles in the JNS journal classifying cavernous vascular malformations of the brainstem, which used numerous illustrations to provide a fascinating picture of the symptoms, signs, and surgical access options for cavernous vascular malformations of the brainstem at different sites. The case models in the illustrations are from BNI neurosurgeons and members of the publisher.
