Functional Neurosurgery: Epilepsy Center

1. Introduction

The epilepsy center of Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, is one of the first and largest neurological centers in epilepsy. According to the China Association Against Epilepsy (CAAE) statistics, the epilepsy center reached 50000 daily outpatient visits per year, 700 epilepsy surgeries per year, 200 SEEG implantation per year, which stays the first place nationwide. There are 27 Neurosurgeons, 19 neurologists, 7 neuroelectrophysiologists, 30 neuroelectrophysiology technicians, 5 pediatricians, 5 neuropsychologists, 3 neuroradiologists, 2 neuropathologists, and 2 neuropharmacologists in this center. The epilepsy center had obtained 19 national research funding and published over 600 papers. The epilepsy center has approved as the base of ‘National training base of neurosurgical robot application demonstration project’ and the chairman department of ‘National neurosurgical robot application demonstration project steering committee.’

This MDT mainly focuses on following diseases and conditions:

(1). Multiple disciplinary evaluations for epilepsy: evaluation of vEEG, SEEG, and symptoms for a localization diagnosis based on the joint grand rounds of neurosurgery and neurology.

(2). Worldwide leading quantitative image post-processing: voxel-based morphometry (VBM), surface-based morphometry (SBM), quantitative interpretation of FDG PET/CT, epileptic index analysis of intracranial electrical signals, cortex extraction analysis, automatic segmentation of cortical veins.

(3). Featured diagnosis and treatment for epilepsy as a national training base of neurosurgical robot application demonstration project: minimally invasive treatment for epilepsy based on neurosurgical robots and neurophysiological monitoring.
