China-Africa Neurosurgeon Training Project

1. Content of Program

◆Visiting/Studying/Training in selected surgical groups led by senior neurosurgeons, the trainee would receive comprehensive guidance and supervision from a professor/senior neurosurgeon.

◆Diseases include: glioma, meningioma, sellar tumors (transnasal endoscopic/transcranial approach), various skull base tumors, trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, and glossopharyngeal neuralgia.

◆Clinical training includes: diagnoses and differential diagnoses of craniocerebral tumor, basic and advanced skills of micro-neurosurgical techniques, Multimodal image Pre-OP evaluation and planning, Advanced image guiding technology, Intra-OP image evaluation and planning, comprehensive adjuvant therapy, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted drug therapy, and immunotherapy.

◆ Opportunities to participate in the Chinese academic conferences.

◆ Opportunities to participate in various research projects of neurosurgery.

◆ Visit the neuro-anatomy training center (2 weeks).

◆ Surgical plan discussion with all senior neurosurgeons every morning.

◆ Entire department collaborative review of all surgical cases of all subspecialties every week.

◆ Entire department joint review of new technique/complicated case every week.

◆ Entire department collaborative morbidity and mortality (M&M) review every week.


2. Schedule for the 4-year Program

The program includes the study of neurosurgery-related disciplines (including neurology, neuro-electrophysiology, neuropathology, microsurgical neuro-anatomy, and microsurgery operation lab), and rotations in 6 neurosurgical subspecialties (each subspecialty for 4 months). In the fourth year, the physician must serve as a chief resident. The total number of operations attended shall not be less than 400. The trainees should contribute to at least one research paper, one review, and one case report as the first author during their 4-year training. The trainees will actively participate in the continuing education activities of organizations at all levels, such as Professional Associations & Societies, and obtain corresponding credits for the continuing medical education.
